The PNG Mum’s Pre-school Project inspires self-reliance by supporting mothers to prepare their children to be school ready. Many primary school age children fail to attend school in PNG because they lack basic literacy and numeracy capacity and confidence. This project is a great example of local people taking charge of their destiny. Local mothers lead and coordinate the groups. Groups meet in local churches, simple bush shelters, or in their homes three days a week for two hours (some meet daily). As of June 2021, there were close to 1,000 children particpating in Mum's Pre-schools across Port Moresby, Lae, and Madang.
The curriculum is designed to be simple and not too onerous so mothers can understand and implement it. Mothers focus on teaching the basic letters, sounds, numbers, colours, and shapes through fun, games, and social interaction. Other learning mediums include monthly themes, daily calendars, classroom rules, rhyming songs/poems, and story time.
