PNG MUm's Preschool Project
PNG Mum's preschool Project is a home-based, early learning and school readiness program for families with young children.
The PNG Mum’s Pre-school Project inspires self-reliance by supporting mothers to prepare their children to be school ready. Many primary school age children fail to attend school in PNG because they lack basic literacy and numeracy capacity and confidence. This project is a great example of local people taking charge of their destiny. Local mothers lead and coordinate the groups. Groups meet in local churches or in their homes three days a week for two hours (some meet daily). As of June 2020, there were a total of 324 students and 39 mothers.
The curriculum is designed to be simple and not too onerous, so mothers can understand and implement it. Mothers focus on teaching the basic letters, sounds, numbers, colours and shapes through fun, games, and social interaction. Other learning mediums include monthly themes, daily calendars, classroom rules, rhyming songs/poems, and story time. Pacific Assist supports Mum’s pre-schools by funding learning resources and materials. Pacific Assist would like to conduct research to evaluate the outcomes for students including their successful transition to and success at school.
